PRINTED Orthotics

Children’s 3D Printed Orthotics, available at our Barrie and Concord locations can be of great benefit to children’s feet and development. They work by restoring the foots natural arch and improving foot function. Our Parent Company Pro Motio Healthcare has been providing 3D Orthotics for Barrie, Concord and Toronto for over 8 years.

When children are young they are still developing muscles and core strength. If a child’smuscles aren’t strong enough they will fatigue more easily. This is often the case with children who complain of tired legs and growing pains as their muscles simply can’t cope with the increased load from walking or activity.

Our aPPROACH to children’s feet & orthotics

At OrthoKids we adopt a thorough yet conservative approach when it comes to children’s feet and orthotics. We don’t like prescribing orthotic devices for children under age 4 (unless there are major symptoms that we believe orthotics can help treat).

The main reason for this is we believe in barefoot walking, especially in those first few years after a child takes their first steps. The importance of barefoot walking should not be underestimated. It helps build proprioception, balance and strength in the small foot muscles, which is vital during the first few years of walking.

Toddlers walk with a wide base of gait and a stomping style. Their feet and arches will generally be flat as they haven’t had time to develop yet. This is all part of natural development. A child’s gait doesn’t develop into an adult like gait (heel to toe propulsion) until age 3-4. Children's Feet Conditions Treated with 3D Printed Orthotics at our Concord & Barrie

Children's Feet Conditions TREATED with 3D Printed Orthotics at our Concord & Barrie Locations

Severs Desease ( Heel Pain)

Sever's disease typically causes pain at both the back and bottom of the heel. The child feels pain whenever putting weight on their feet, even when just standing. Treatment may include rest, foot exercises, and orthotic devices.

Toe Walking

Toe walking is a common pattern of walking in very young children, typically those who are 3 years old or younger. However, in children 3 years and older walking on tiptoes may not be normal

Out-Toeing (AKA Duck Feet)

Often referred to as duck feet, out-toeing is when the child's feet point outward. Early treatment is recommended, particularly as the condition puts pressure on the joints, possibly causing pain and affecting mobility as the child grows older.

In-Toeing (AKA Pigeon Toes)

Commonly known as pigeon toes, in-toeing occurs when the child's feet point inward. The most common cause is metatarsus adductus, or bending of the foot bones. Tibial torsion, or twisted shins, may also cause the feet to turn inward.

Flat Feet Treatment

Pediatric flat feet is when the entire sole of the child's foot contacts the ground when standing. As children's bones and joints are extremely flexible, flat feet is very common until about 4 years of age.

Achilles Tendinitis

Achilles tendinitis in kids is a fairly common condition that can be caused by overuse. It typically affects adults, but it can also affect children, particularly older kids who participate in sports.

Our criteria for orthotic recommendations in children

Orthotics are only prescribed for children at our Barrie and Concord clinics following thorough diagnosis and 3D Foot scan and computer gait analysis. Our therapists do not over prescribe children’s orthotic devices. We follow a strict criteria and we will only recommend orthotics for children in the following circumstances:

To reduce symptoms (lower leg or foot) when poor foot mechanics are a causative factor.

To improve gait, alignment and function. For e.g. to help in cases of tripping, clumsiness or poor balance, most often the result of low muscle tone.

To protect foot structure (bones and joints) from harmful biomechanical forces and future changes e.g. bunions, arthritic changes, toe deformities.

FAQ Children's Orthotics

My child has flat feet but no symptoms do they need orthotics?

Whilst it is likely it is always best to get our opinion first. Not all children with flat feet will require orthotics. It ultimately depends on how the child’s feet are functioning and if they are likely to cause future problems if not supported.

How long will orthotics in children last for?

We find that orthotics in children last for 1.5 – 2 years or two shoe sizes depending on growth.

My child has had custom orthotics in the past but they were too hard and uncomfortable?

We have prescribed custom children’s orthotics for over 10 years, including semi-flexible rigid orthotics and if they are prescribed right they should be 100% comfortable. Uncomfortable custom orthotics are almost always caused by an inaccurate design and lack of precision.
